April Speaker
Bryan Rhodes will speak on Breeding the rarer breeds of goldfish: The Philadelphia Veiltail Goldfish.
Date: April 4th 2024
Synopsis: Personally what drew me into
goldfish keeping were the cultural aspects,
as goldfish are a deep part of the Asian
culture. The other aspect was understanding
their genetics. Fortunately, there are two
breeds that originate in the USA, and one
happens to be the Philadelphia Veiltail Goldfish.
I will be discussing the ends and outs of breeding
these rare breed of goldfish, along with their history.
Bio: Bryan Rhodes, hailing from rural Southside Virginia, nurtured a
passion for animals since childhood. His upbringing immersed him in rural pursuits
like hunting and fishing, which sparked his interest in biology. College revealed
the possibility of studying animals academically, steering him toward a career in
biology. Though initially drawn to fish and aquariums, he pursued ornithology in
both undergrad and graduate studies. Despite being unable to keep pets during his
PhD fieldwork in New Zealand, upon returning to the USA, he reignited his childhood
hobby of aquariums. His background in conservation genetics prompted an interest in
goldfish. This passion led him to meet Gary Hater and delve into breeding Veiltail
Goldfish, later expanding to Bubble-eye Goldfish
